Hello and welcome RGS... Great looking mount.. I will have lot's of questions for you.. I am just starting to learn how to do Taxidermy.. I have my first tanned skin hanging and drying as I type this.. I have been buying and watching video's and reading to no end.. I did do a deer foot project that came out ok..

I love the mounts on your web site....

Airborneguy - August 19, 2006 10:16 PM (GMT)
Do you guys think I should make a taxidermy page for the forum?

nybowhunter43 - August 19, 2006 11:14 PM (GMT)
Might not be a bad idea.. Give everyone a plce to show off their mounts and ask quetions.. Couldn't hurt having it..

XtremeSportsmen - August 20, 2006 12:30 AM (GMT)
yeah RGS, you have some nice work. Or shall I say you do some nice work. Wish you were closer I'd give you a shot.....

As for the taxidermy page, I agree. It doesn't just have to do with taxidermist. Guys can show off their trophies and their trophy rooms. Unfortunately mine is not yet under construction.

rgswildlife - August 20, 2006 12:16 PM (GMT)
It works on the other sites I post on and it brings in a lot of hits from people who wouldn't normally look here. I have put a link on my page to your page. Good Luck

Rich :D

European skull mounts ,how to do it!

In my shop I use 35% peroxide. First take off most of the meat and brains, cover the skull not the horns with the peroxide, use rags around the base of the horns so the peroxide can leech up to the underside of the burr. After a week or two (depends on how well you cleaned it) rinse it in dawn dish detergent and water till it comes out clean, place it in the sun to dry. If it is the way you want it, then cover it with modge-podge high gloss and it will be sealed and stay clean for ever. If you used bleach the modge-podge will seal the skull and stop the flaking that can go on forever. You can put the skull back into the peroxide as many times and as long as you like, but if you notice the skull is falling apart take it out you have left it in too long. You will have to glue the teeth into the skull. Never use bleach because it will breakdown the bone forever. The racks and skulls below were whitened, this is what the customer wanted.

That's real nice. Looks better with the natural racks though.

nybowhunter43 - August 21, 2006 03:58 PM (GMT)
How do you degrease your skulls?

I have a Baboon and a warthog soaking in WASCO Mild Degreaser now.. The skulls were cleaned over in Africa but now the grease is showing up on them.

rgswildlife - August 21, 2006 04:35 PM (GMT)
As i said in the post above the 35% peroxide will clean up must of the grease and after that if they still will not come clean I paint them with pigmented shellac, you can hide most of the brush strokes then I use high gloss modgepodge (home Depot has ). If you have a question call me at 732-449-5950 The two white skulls were done this way.

Rich <_<

XtremeSportsmen - August 21, 2006 11:54 PM (GMT)
Now you tell me Rich, where were you 20 years ago.....I did the bleach thing and it did part of the horn on two nice eights I got as a kid (couldn't afford to get them done). I ended up painting the skulls with glossy white and left the horns. I still have one of the skulls, I will try to post a picture of it. i recently gave the other to a friend for helping me move. He collects but doesn't hunt much....... B)

nybowhunter43 - August 22, 2006 12:14 AM (GMT)
Thanks..

I thought that peroxicide was just for whiting. Never knew it degreased also.

rgswildlife - August 22, 2006 12:37 PM (GMT)
Don't forget that the peroxide I use is 35% and higher, it will eat thru your skin if left on for any time. If it gets on you and you wash it right away it will not burn, but be carefull. I buy it from a chemical co.

Rich ;)

XtremeSportsmen - August 22, 2006 12:45 PM (GMT)
See Rich this is why I pay an expert to do my taxidermy work. When you start talking about eating through your skin and the what nots I just say to myself, "I don't think this is for me". Couldn't you use terms like the doctor's do. "This is going to be a little tender" or "You may have slight discomfort". But to say it will take your skin off, now that's something I probably would rather have someone else do for me.

And further more the slight discomfort and little tender I had after surgery was the worst pain yet......LOL B) :D :D :D B)

When I put the skull in the peroxide there is always meat on the bone, but when it is removed most of the meat is gone and what is left has separated from the bone for easy removal. Its not dangerous but I do wear safety goggles for eye protection.

That's a real nice piece Rich. I have a gray fox mount on a branch that is a nice life size, but I like the pheasant combo. I also have a beaver on a table top mount that is nice but I never had the room for it, once I finish the basement I will have all the room I need to display all my mounts.

Airborneguy - August 23, 2006 07:44 PM (GMT)
I was just gonna say... I didn't see any beaver yesterday. I'd like to see that one day.

Nice. The one I have mounted is standing with cut trees next to him. Taxider=mist made a fake pond with a poly of some kind. and put sand arond the base with beaver prints in the sand. Then he sprayed it so it is all together. I give you guys a lot of credit you do get creative.......
