I was just wondering, Can you fire a slug through the vented barrell of the shot gun. The shotgun came with 2 barrels, one vented and one rifle, Im new to the shotgun, any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

Hmmm.. Not 100% sure, but slugs are meant to be fired out of rifled barrels, which causes the slug to spin, increasing accuracy and speed. I believe that if you fired a slug from a non-rifled barrel that the performance would be much lower.

Airborne, is correct. Use the rifled barrel for the slugs. That's what it made for. Yes you can shoot slugs through the vented barrel but it will not be as accurate. Your 870 will drive tacks with the slug barrel and a good sabot style slug. DO NOT shoot bird shot through the rifled barrel. You will ruine the lands and grooves.

Vic,

I have been hunting with the 870 Remington for several years as my deer slayer. I have tried several slug makes and it was quiet obvious after many attempts that the Remington Sabot slugs are most accurate. If you own the 870 Magnum (I think its called that) you can shoot 2 3/4" or 3" out of your rifled barrel. Both work excellent. But hold on while shotting those 3" slugs.

I recently modified the gun with the Bushnell red dot scope. DEADLY!

The non magnified sight allows you to shoot with both eyes open giving you full periperal vision. Just point and shoot!

Good hunting

I should mention that the modification of the non magnified red dot scope is used purely in situations of close range. I hunt / own property in Schoharie County NY (4G section) which is heavily wooded with 50 - 60 yard shots the norm.

good hunting.

if your 870 has a smooth bore barrel you can also use rifled slugs
