The Essex County, N.J. prosecutor's office has made an arrest in the "road rage" shooting of Fairfield Police officer Gerald Veneziano, a source told NBC New York early Saturday morning.
No name has been released yet, but an arrest of the suspect a month ago in Union County for a shooting led to a ballistics test that matched the bullets fired into Veneziano, according to this source.
Veneziano, 26, was on his way to work when the "road rage" incident led to him being followed to within a block of the Fairfield Police Station.
Veneziano decided to check out the person who was following him when he parked nearby. Shots rang out, and the officer was hit six times.
Fairfield Police Chief Steve Gutkin told The Record newspaper 3 weeks ago that Veneziano is progressing well and going through rehab.
The unnamed suspect will be charged with attempted murder, according to the source, though it's still not clear what and who sparked the original "road rage."
The suspect's car was a rented Dodge Caliber, close to the description Veneziano wrote down for investigators in the first days after he was shot, when he was unable to talk.
