Went up to my cousin's cabin for opening weekend (well, southern zone opener). Had a great time, but no deer. I know it's tough up there, but he's said I can use the cabin anytime, so my plan is to get to know some of the 55,000 acres of state land behind his place. Nice huh? ;)
Actually, me and my girl are looking at buying a place right near him. It's beautiful up there, Schroon Lake.
Deer are there.. You gotta put some time in.. Shop around, deals are to be had in this economy for sure..
We were literally just talking about it again. We're thinking next year, probably after hunting season though, that we should be able to start seriously looking for a place.
My friend's uncle had a house on the lake years ago. I hunted up there one season and it was an absolute paradise. Beautiful area to chase deer.
We didn't see many deer but some very good bucks were taken over the years my my friend's uncle and his sons. Just have to invest a bit of time scouting and getting off the beaten path. Good luck to you.
I'd scour the deer & bear take reports, the 2008 ones are on the dec site, and find a 'good' town/zone with better than avg harvest, and plenty of state land. I think the paper companies still allow day use for free..
